Nature
Rain sounds
Steady rain at a comfortable distance: one even texture, with no thunder and no wind.
Rain is one of the four nature sounds in Background Noises: steady rain heard from a comfortable distance, one continuous texture with no thunder, no wind and no drips. A paid plan plays it for hours, as a run of long tracks one after another; the free plan plays a 60-second sample.

What does the rain sound like?
Like steady rain heard from a short way off: a soft, wide hiss made of countless small impacts, with no single drop standing out. Some tracks sit a little closer, some are heavier rain heard from farther off, a distant roar more than a patter. What they share is that nothing changes much: the rain does not build into a storm or stop for a break, and there is no thunder, wind, birdsong or traffic on top.
Rain or pink noise?
They are close cousins. Both spread their power widely across the range, with less at the very top than white noise has, which is why rain is so often compared with pink noise. The difference is texture. Pink noise is perfectly even, the same from one second to the next. Rain has grain: a faint, random patter inside the hiss. If you want a sound with nothing in it at all, choose pink; if you want something that sounds like a place, choose Rain.
How do I play rain in Background Noises?
Tap Rain
In the web player or the app, it is under Nature, and it starts at once.
Let it run
On Premium, the rain plays one long track after another for hours, until you pause it or the sleep timer stops it.
Speaker or headphones?
Either. Rain needs no headphones, and a small speaker across the room puts the rain in the room rather than in your ears. A phone speaker loses some of the low roar in the heavier tracks.
How loud?
About as loud as rain would be through a window: present, but quiet enough to talk over. With headphones, lower still, especially for a long session.
Related: River and Forest, two of the other nature sounds (the fourth, Fire, is on the sounds page); sounds for sleep; and, if you came for a storm, thunder.
Press play.
The Free plan plays a 60-second sample of everything. Premium plays the eight music and four nature stations, the noise colors and the tones for hours.
