What does the forest sound like?
Sparse and unhurried. A short phrase from one bird, a pause, an answer from farther off, then quiet for a few seconds before the next call. The birds stay at the same soft level, never close or loud, so nothing calls right beside your ear. The pauses are part of the sound: this is the one nature sound in Background Noises that is not a continuous texture.
How is Forest different from the other nature sounds?
Rain, River and Fire each hold one even texture that fills the silence. Forest leaves the silence in. If you want something to cover the sounds around you, one of the steady three, or a noise color such as brown noise, will do that better. If you want a quiet room with a little life in it, Forest is the one to try.
Is Forest a good sound to fall asleep to?
That depends on you, and we make no promise either way. Some people like the gentle calls; others find that a sound that starts and stops keeps them listening. If you are not sure, play the 60-second sample, or try a steady sound from sounds for sleep instead.
How do I play it?

A speaker suits it well: birdsong from across the room sounds the way it would outdoors, at a distance. With headphones, keep the volume low, because the pauses tempt you to turn it up and the next call then arrives louder than you wanted.
