About the sound

How the sound is made

Category by category: what plays, and how each one is made.

Last reviewed October 19, 2026.

Background Noises has four categories of sound. Two are synthesized by eleMusic's own signal processing software: Noise and Tones. Two are generated with AI models and then mastered by eleMusic: the Music stations and the Nature sounds. If a category changes, this page changes with it.

How each one is made

How the noise colors are made

Each noise color is calculated, not recorded. A seeded random source makes white noise, with a separate stream for each ear. Pink noise comes from it through a standard pinking filter, brown noise through a gentle integrator, and grey noise from pink through an inverse loudness curve. Brown and grey also pass a high-pass filter so that small speakers are not asked for bass they cannot play. Every length is rendered as one continuous file for that length, so a 12-hour session is not a short clip on repeat.

How the frequency tones are made

Each tone is calculated: a fundamental at the chosen frequency with three soft overtones above it, the same in both ears so it never forms a binaural beat, and a slow swell in level so it does not sound frozen. Like the noise colors, every length is its own continuous render.

How the music is made

Each music station is one of eleMusic's own. Its tracks are original instrumental music, generated for eleMusic from that station's own recipe with generative AI models, including models from third parties, then selected, checked and mastered by eleMusic before they play. The recipes name no artist, no model is asked to imitate a real performer, and we never describe the music as made by people. A session plays the station's tracks one after another. Music that sounds similar may exist elsewhere.

How the nature sounds are made

Each nature sound is one of eleMusic's nature stations. eleMusic assembles and masters its long tracks from short sound effects generated with third-party generative AI models, joined so that they play as one steady texture, and a session plays them one after another. They are generated, not recorded outdoors, and similar or identical sounds may be available to others.

What generated means here

The Music stations are eleMusic's own instrumental stations: original tracks generated for eleMusic from each station's recipe with generative AI models, including models from third parties, then selected, checked and mastered by eleMusic. The Nature sounds are eleMusic's nature stations, assembled and mastered by eleMusic from sound effects generated with third-party generative AI models. Neither is performed or recorded by people, and we never say it is. Generated audio can resemble other audio, so similar music or sounds may exist elsewhere.

The rules we follow

  • We describe a category only once the description is true, and we change the description when the sound changes.
  • Where a category uses audio generated with AI models, this page, the FAQ and the Terms of Service say so in plain words.
  • We never describe generated audio as made by people, and we never claim that a sound is something it is not.
  • We never put AI, or the name of a model, in a page title, a store subtitle or a headline.
  • We do not say what a sound does to your body or mind. We say what it is.

What we do not claim

Background Noises is not a medical device. Its sounds are for general listening and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or medical condition. Consult a healthcare professional before use if you have epilepsy or a seizure disorder, a pacemaker or a heart condition, a psychiatric condition, or are pregnant. Stop if you feel discomfort.

We make no claim that any sound changes sleep, focus, mood or anything else about you. If you have a health concern, talk to a doctor.

Something sounds wrong?

If a sound has a click, a tone that should not be there, or anything else that seems off, write to joshua@thirdspaced.com with the sound and roughly how far into the session you heard it. We read every report, and we can take a sound out for everyone while we look into it.

Press play.

The Free plan plays a 60-second sample of everything. Premium plays the eight music and four nature stations, the noise colors and the tones for hours.
